The hypothesis that ecological units (ecosystems, landscapes, or the biosphere itself) are analogous to organisms is generally viewed as an outdated or freak idea associated in the history of ecology with the names of Frederic Clements and, more recently, James Lovelock. Against this standard view, I propose that ecological organicism is still relevant for science : it’s the best way to justify the use of functional and health vocabulary in ecosystem ecology and it’s a good hypothesis to explain the dynamics of ecosystems. This view is developed against the idea that ecosystems are simply physical systems which all phenomena are fully explainable by physical theories.
