Human culture constitutes an inheritance system with similarities to and differences from the genetic inheritance system. Sometime during the Pleistocene, human adaptations came to dominated by culturally transmitted technologies and social institutions. Social learning is very common in social animals, but non-human systems of social learning transmit relatively few and relatively simple behaviours. Human cognition is adapted to acquire large amounts of information from other individuals by social learning. Accurate and comparatively rapid social learning allows an open-ended process of cumulative evolution as individuals acquire complex ideas and skills, modify them slightly, and teach them to new individuals in turn. Cultural evolution is substantially guided by weak general purpose learning and decision-making. Cultural adaptations arise by integrating many individual innovations and adoption decisions, typically over many generations. Natural selection also acts on cultural variation, but adding evolutionary forces derived from decision-making greatly increases the rate of cultural evolution compared to genetic evolution. Cultural adaptations create novel environments that in turn generate selection on genes. The best documented case is the evolution of adult lactase secretion in populations in Western Eurasia and Africa that developed dairying. Genome wide scans for genes that have undergone recent selective sweeps suggest that many more examples will eventually be verified. The most controversial gene-culture coevolution hypothesis is that human pro-social instincts, empathy, patriotism, and the like, evolved when selection on cultural differences between tribal scale social units favored institutions that exerted social selection on our genes.

Data: 15 de outubro de 2012

Hora: 10h00-12h00

Local: Instituto de Biologia

Sala: Anf. 124

Moderador: Prof. Charbel el-Hani, Ufba

***************************************************************************************************

Economia Verde, Sustentabilidade e Inclusão Social

Profª. Humans in the Holocene have been such a successful species that we have come to be a global ecological dominant. Our ancestor Homo erectus was already an extremely widespread species and by the end of the Pleistocene humans inhabited every continent except Antarctica and most nearby islands. But if the human adaptation is an all-purpose world beater why did it not evolve long ago? Most hypotheses attribute the emergence of humans to some rare breakthrough. Lumsden and Wilson spoke of our “cosmic good fortune.” It is worth entertaining more straightforward adaptive hypotheses. Harry Jerison’s study of fossil brain endocasts noted that brain sizes in many mammalian lineages increased over the last 80 million years or so, with the fastest rate of increase during the last couple of million years. The large human brain is the extreme case, but it is part of a much more general trend. Big brains are costly organs whose presumed function is adaptation to variable environments. Paleoclimatologists have documented a Cenozoic trend toward cooler, drier, and more variable environments. The pole to equator temperature gradient has gotten much more extreme. Thus, there is a crude fit between climate deterioration and mammalian brain size increase. However, brains are presumably actually an adaptation to high frequency components of environmental variation in space and time but for most of the Cenozoic the paleoclimate and paleoecological records cannot yet resolve these features. The exceptions are ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica and lake and marine sediment cores is regions where deposition rates are high. These high resolution cores are beginning to give us a picture of climate variation in the last half of the Pleistocene. These records depict many high amplitude millennial and sub-millennial scale climate shifts superimposed on the major glacial cycles with time scales of tens of millennia. Theoretical models of cultural evolution suggest that social learning is most useful as an adaptive system when there is lots of variation on time scales of a generation to a few tens of generations. The longest high resolution records we have suggest that the number of abrupt climate events has increased substantially over the last 8 major glacial cycles. The amount of millennial and sub-millennial scale variation was apparently most intense between 60,000 years ago and the Holocene, the period when anatomically Modern Humans expanded out of Africa and began to routinely manufacture complex tools and produce exquisite art. The pattern of brain size increase in humans parallels the increase in abrupt climate variation. When the last glacial ended 11,500 years ago the climate become much less variable, a pattern seen in previous interglacials. But our now highly cultural species reacted to the present interglacial in a completely different way to previous ones. We embarked on a culture-based adaptive radiation, evolving a highly diversified series of economies, most based on plant and animal domestication.

Data: 17 de outubro de 2012

Hora: 10h00-12h00

Local: Instituto de Biologia

Sala: Anf. 124

Moderador: Prof. Charbel El-Hani, Ufba

***************************************************************************************************

O conhecimento ecológico no planejamento territorial: conciliando o uso e ocupação do solo com a manutenção da biodiversidade

Dary Rigueira

Biólogo e mestre em Ecologia e Biomonitoramento pela Universidade Federal da Bahia. But what were these environments like? Some hypotheses have been based on the assumption that, although our ancestors lived in social groups, these groups were divided into families with children being cared for by both parents. However, anthropological evidence suggests that contemporary humans are more accurately described as “cooperative breeders” than “biparental carers”. Furthermore, it is likely that hominins have been caring for their young communally for at least 1.8 million years. If this is the case, then the environments in which humans evolved were rather different from those that have often been described by evolutionary psychologists and this new understanding may contribute new insights to discussions of the evolutionary origins of our biology and psychology. What traits would have been favoured by natural selection in a cooperatively breeding social group? I will argue that the social environment children experienced in a cooperatively breeding group may help to explain the human capacity for culture, some of the puzzling behaviour of contemporary humans and the rapid cultural changes we are experiencing now.

Data: 18 de outubro de 2012

Hora: 10h00-12h00

Local: Instituto de Biologia

Sala: Anf. 124

Moderador: Prof. Charbel El-Hani, Ufba

***************************************************************************************************

Métodos participativos como apoio ao processo decisório na gestão ambiental: o uso de mapas cognitivos difusos

Drª.
